Recently, more and more job-seeking and starting business foreigners are coming to Lithuania.

Foreigners coming to Lithuania to work or start business must have a national visa (D) or a residence permit in Lithuania. A foreigner holding a national visa (D) can come to the Republic of Lithuania and stay there for the time specified in the visa.

Visa and temporary residence permit on the legal activity grounds

You can receive a visa on legal activity grounds if You are the manager of the company or a shareholder of UAB with at least 1/3 of the authorized capital of the company;

You can get a national visa if you come to the Republic of Lithuania to engage in legal activities and you are a participant of the company registered in the Register of Legal Entities, established not earlier than one year before the date of application for a national visa, if the value of company’s equity (for non-public limited companies and non-private limited companies – assets) is at least 28 thousand euro, whereof at least 14 thousand euro are your invested funds or other assets.

You can also receive a temporary residence permit in Lithuania on the legal activity grounds if You are a participant and manager or shareholder in a company registered in the Republic of Lithuania (You are a participant in a company that, for at least the last 6 months before your application for a residence permit, in accordance with the business plan in the Republic of Lithuania carries out the activities specified in the founding documents of the company, where are employed full-time citizens of the Republic of Lithuania, citizens of another EU Member State or EFTA State, or foreigners permanently residing in the Republic of Lithuania, whose monthly wages in total are at least 2 times the average monthly gross wage in the national economy published by the Lithuanian Department of Statistics for the last calendar year (including the data on wages of individual enterprises), and the value of equity (for non-AB and non-UAB – assets) is not less than 28,000 EUR, whereof at least 14,000 EUR is your invested funds or other assets, and you are the manager of this company or a shareholder of AB or UAB whose nominal value of the shares of the company being owned is not less than 1/3 of the authorized capital of this company).

Employment service for foreigners

Those wishing to work in Lithuania must obtain a national D visa. You can recieve visa on the work grounds if:

  • you intend to enter or have entered into an employment contract with an employer registered in Lithuania;
  • you come to work according to the list of critical skills professions;
  • you come for seasonal job and have a seasonal work permit issued by the Employment Service.

It is important to note that the national visa is issued for a maximum of one year.

If you want to work in Lithuania under an employment contract and you wish to stay in Lithuania for a longer period of time, you can obtain temporary residence permit.

It is important to note that the temporary residence permit will be issued or changed for you for the period of working in Lithuania, but no more than 2 years.

It is important to note that temporary residence permit can be issued for a foreigner on the work grounds if:

  • you are a highly skilled employee;
  • you intend to work and you do not need an assesment by the Employment Service regarding compliance with the needs of the Lithuanian labour market;
  • you are a permanent employee of an EU company;
  • you intend to work under employment contract and your profession is not on the shortage occupations list;
  • you have completed your studies in Lithuania and intend to work;
  • you intend to work under employment contract and your profession is on the shortage occupations list.

BLUE CARD

Another area, which we can help you is getting a Blue card. The Blue Card is a permit to legally reside and work in Lithuania and move to another EU Member State to work in a highly skilled job.

You can get a Blue card if you have a higher education diploma or a minimum of 3 years’ professional experience equivalent to a higher education qualification as a manager in the field of information technology and communication technology services or as a specialist in information technology and communication technology within the last 7 years or a minimum of 5 years’ professional experience equivalent to a higher education qualification, and I am interested in being employed by a Lithuanian employer, which requires a highly qualified employee and intends to pay me a salary of at least 1.5 times the average gross monthly salary for the last published calendar year, or, if my profession is included in the list of high value-added professions for which there is a shortage of workers in the Republic of Lithuania, a salary of at least 1.2 times the average gross monthly salary for the last published calendar year.

Blue card is issued for a period of at least of 3 years.

A foreigner holding a national visa can come to the Republic of Lithuania and stay in the Republic of Lithuania for the entire period of validity of the national visa, which cannot exceed 12 months.

If you intend to stay longer, you should choose a temporary residence permit (it is usually issued for 2 years, for highly qualified workers – 3 years, then it can usually be changed). You can get a national multiple-entry visa for the period of processing your application for a temporary residence permit.

You can get a national visa if the Employment Service has issued you a work permit.

First of all, employer must apply to the territorial division of the Employment Service in order for you to issue a work permit.

It is important to note that:

  • the national visa is issued for a maximum of one year;
  • the national visa is issued for a period of at least 91 days;
  • if you have been issued with a national visa for one year, you may be issued with another national visa if more than 180 days had expired from your previous visa or the total validity period of all visas you had. The total period of validity of several national visas must be counted from the date of issue of the previous national visa, if less than 180 days have elapsed since the expiry of its validity;
  • if you are holding a national visa, valid for 1 year or several national visas with a total validity of 1 year, and intending to apply for a temporary residence permit, in order to stay in Lithuania during the consideration of the application will have to submit this application in advance – 2 to 4 months before the expiry of the actual national visa.
